Does exposure to blue light accelerate aging? Why do white LED displays emit blue light?

Oregon State University researchers released the latest research results, they found that exposure to high-intensity LED display blue light, accelerated the aging process of fruit flies. The findings show that light changes levels of metabolites, substances that keep insect cells working properly. This means that blue light may be detrimental to various cells in the human body and may also cause humans to age faster.

The conclusions are not definitive, however, because studies in human cells are needed to determine whether exposure to blue light causes similar changes in human metabolites.

In fact, various digital products such as display screens, mobile phones, ipads, and TV sets that we frequently use in our lives are the ones with the most blue light. Basically, as long as the products that use LED liquid crystal screens will radiate blue light. Blue light actually exists in sunlight, but not all blue light is harmful to the eyes, in fact only short-wave blue light is harmful.

Natural blue light refers to the blue light in sunlight with a wavelength range of 400-500nm. Artificial blue light refers to the blue light in white LED electronic screens and lighting equipment with a wavelength range of 430-480nm. The white light emitted by the LED desk lamp we see is a mixture of two colors, or more than two kinds of light.

At present, the popular way of manufacturing white light is the technology of combining blue light diode chips and light yellow phosphors. The blue light diode chip will first emit blue light, and this blue light will pass through the yellowish phosphor to generate yellow light, and the two will finally be mixed to form white light.

Blue light has a shorter wavelength and higher energy than red and green light. Prolonged exposure to blue light (390nm~760nm) can induce blindness. Among them, high-energy blue light with a wavelength between 415 and 455 nm is the most harmful to the retina.

If you continue to stare at the LED screen, blue light will cause vision damage, because short-wave blue light directly passes through the lens and irradiates the retina, free radicals will be generated at this time, which will cause damage to epithelial cells, and photosensitive cells will also start due to Lack of nutrients leads to decline, eventually causing irreversible visual damage. Second, severe blue light exposure can also cause fundus macular degeneration.
