Roscosmos unveils first mock-up of new space station

Roscosmos has revealed for the first time a mock-up of the planned space station. This shows from the side that Russia does intend to withdraw from the International Space Station project.

Roscosmos presented the new space station model “ROSS” at the “Army-2022” forum in Moscow’s Patriot Park.

The new head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, has previously said that Russia will start withdrawing from the International Space Station project after 2024 and is working to develop its own orbiting space station.

The International Space Station was launched in 1998. NASA wants to keep the International Space Station operational until 2030. NASA said it has not yet received official notification of Russia’s plans to withdraw from the ISS, following news that the Russian space agency will remain involved in the ISS program until 2028.

The new space station will be launched in two phases, Roscosmos said in a statement, without giving a specific launch date.

In the first phase, the space station with four modules will start operating. Roscosmos said two additional modules and a service platform will be launched later, and the overall plan will be large enough to accommodate four astronauts and corresponding scientific equipment.

The planned new space station will provide Russian astronauts with a wider view of Earth than the current International Space Station, Roscosmos said.

It is reported that the Russian Space Agency is currently working on the design of a new space station.

Local Russian media hinted that the first phase of the launch is scheduled to take place in 2025-2026, not later than 2030; the second phase of the launch is scheduled to take place in 2030-2035.

According to current assumptions, the new Russian space station will not be permanently stationed, but astronauts will be arranged for long-term stationing twice a year.
