WHO: 1 million people have died from the new crown epidemic this year

Two and a half years after the Covid-19 pandemic, we have passed another tragic milestone: 1 million people have died from Covid-19 this year.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a regular press conference of the World Health Organization (WHO) that 1 million people worldwide have died from the new crown epidemic this year, and countries should strengthen efforts to target high-risk groups such as health workers and the elderly. Covid-19 vaccination efforts and strive for a 70% vaccination rate for the entire population.

He said: “Two and a half years after the Covid-19 pandemic, we have passed another tragic milestone: 1 million people have died from Covid-19 this year. This is when we have all the necessary tools to prevent deaths, so We can’t say yet, we’ve learned to live with Covid-19.”

Happily, progress is being made in some of the countries with the lowest Covid-19 vaccination rates, especially in Africa, but one-third of the world’s population remains unvaccinated, the WHO noted.

To help increase vaccination rates, WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, Vaccine Alliance and partners are actively promoting mass vaccination campaigns.

“There is still a lot of work to be done,” Tedros said. “One-third of the world’s population remains unvaccinated against COVID-19, including two-thirds of healthcare workers and three-quarters of elderly people in low-income countries.”

Tedros said that all countries, regardless of income level, must do more to vaccinate those most at risk, ensure they have access to life-saving treatments, continue testing and sequencing, and develop targeted policies. To limit the spread of the virus and save lives, this is the best way to drive a global recovery.

The World Health Organization previously released news that a total of 15,000 people died from the new crown in a week, and the number of deaths increased by 35% in the past four weeks.

In addition, a new study found that as many as 4 million people in the United States could lose their jobs due to “long-term symptoms of the new crown” (long-term new crown), accounting for about 2.4% of the country’s working population. Other countries have come to similar conclusions about the severity of Covid-19, with a survey finding that a quarter of UK companies cite the symptom as the main reason for prolonged employee absences.

In response to the long-term symptoms of the new crown and the possible wave of infections in autumn and winter, WHO experts called for: “Countries should resume measures to limit the spread of the virus, increase vaccination coverage of residents, encourage the wearing of masks in public places, and prepare to respond to their own health systems. increased load.”
